Rhode Island Launches Lab Space Subsidy for Biotech Startups

The program, operated in partnership with Portal Innovations, provides selected startups with up to two wet lab benches and a dedicated desk. With a total funding commitment of $250,000, the initiative aims to lower the high overhead costs that often stall scientific development. Beyond physical infrastructure, residents will gain access to specialized equipment, investor networks, and mentorship from industry leaders across Portal’s national sites.

Applications are open until September 24, 2026, and the program is not restricted to local entities. Founders from across the United States and abroad are eligible to compete for a spot, provided they commit to establishing or expanding their operations within Rhode Island. According to Bob Cormier, CEO of the Life Science Hub, the goal is to attract researchers who need a launchpad to prove their science and scale their operations. Successful applicants will be based at the 150 Richmond Street facility, which sits at the center of the city’s Innovation District.
