AutoTrust Alliance Challenges Public Dealer Groups Through Shared Scale

In its first year, the dealer-owned platform AutoTrust has recruited over 300 franchise dealerships, aiming to grant independent operators the purchasing power and negotiating leverage previously reserved for large, publicly traded automotive retail conglomerates.

AutoTrust Alliance Challenges Public Dealer Groups Through Shared Scale

For decades, the automotive retail landscape has favored public groups, which leveraged massive consolidation to command superior supplier incentives and pricing. AutoTrust, founded by CEO Dave Mondragon, bypasses the traditional acquisition model by organizing independent dealers into a single, cohesive economic network. This structure allows franchise owners to maintain full control of their businesses while accessing volume-driven savings that were once out of reach.

The alliance operates on the premise that scale is a mechanical advantage rather than an indicator of superior management. By aggregating the transaction volume of 300-plus dealerships, the platform negotiates terms that generate significant annual savings. Unlike public corporations that distribute returns to outside shareholders, AutoTrust returns these platform revenues directly to its member dealers through quarterly payouts.

Richard Galanti, former CFO of Costco and current strategic advisor to the alliance, notes that the model mirrors successful retail principles by applying collective buying power to the independent dealership sector. As the network continues its expansion, the organization plans to further reduce operating costs for its members, aiming to solidify a competitive alternative to the consolidation trend that has dominated the industry for years.
