Allegheny Health Network partners with START to expand cancer trials

The collaboration establishes a dedicated START research site within the AHN Cancer Center at Allegheny General Hospital. By embedding these specialized trials directly into the existing care environment, the organizations intend to bridge the gap between community oncology and cutting-edge research. This integration allows patients to pursue investigational treatments without leaving their regional healthcare network.

Approximately 89,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed annually across Pennsylvania, yet many patients have historically faced barriers to early-stage trial participation. Nick Slack, CEO of START, noted that the partnership leverages AHN’s infrastructure to bring global research capabilities to a local level. David Bartlett, chair of the AHN Cancer Center, emphasized that the move aligns with the network's goal of providing advanced, research-driven care to its 20,000 annual new patients. The new site joins a global network of 16 locations, granting Pennsylvania patients immediate access to a portfolio of nearly 1,000 active industry-sponsored studies.
