US Targets Middle Corridor Nations in Crackdown on Chinese Trade

The Trump administration has publicly identified over 40 nations, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, as key facilitators in a massive Chinese tariff evasion scheme. Labeled the Great Transshipment Scam, the strategy allegedly allows Beijing to bypass U.S. duties by routing exports through smaller economies with lax customs enforcement.

US Targets Middle Corridor Nations in Crackdown on Chinese Trade

The White House report categorizes these four nations as Tier III states, citing their use of free zones, low-cost labor, and bonded warehousing to mask the true origin of Chinese goods. By serving as conduits in what the document describes as China’s Shadow Transshipment Network, these countries risk complicating their burgeoning diplomatic ties with Washington. This friction comes at a delicate moment, as the U.S. simultaneously pursues a peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan and seeks to secure critical mineral supplies across Central Asia.

These states occupy a central role in the Middle Corridor, a trade route championed by the U.S. and the European Union to bypass traditional Russian paths. However, the report warns that participation in Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative creates commercial dependencies that facilitate these illicit flows. The administration estimates the resulting losses to the U.S. Treasury at between $40 billion and $303 billion annually, arguing that the practice suppresses domestic production and obscures the true scale of the trade deficit.

To combat this, the administration is deploying an AI-driven surveillance system dubbed America’s Detective Border. The technology is designed to cross-reference global shipping data and routing histories to flag inconsistencies invisible to human inspectors. Officials acknowledge that the initiative faces a persistent cat-and-mouse dynamic, as Beijing is expected to adapt its logistics to maintain its export advantage despite increased scrutiny.
