The Credential Gap: Why Consumers Fall for Moving Scams

Confidence is failing to protect homeowners from deceptive moving practices. Although 81.4% of recent movers believe they can spot a scam, 45.2% still report falling victim to hidden fees, damaged property, or ghosting companies, revealing a dangerous disconnect between perceived digital savvy and the realities of the relocation industry.

The Credential Gap: Why Consumers Fall for Moving Scams

The 2026 Consumer Moving Scams Survey, which polled 500 individuals across the United States and Canada, points to a persistent "credential gap" in the industry. While consumers identify unclear pricing as their top concern, only 27.6% actually bother to verify a company’s licensing, insurance, or official business records before signing a contract. This reliance on anecdotal reviews over formal documentation often leaves customers vulnerable to predatory tactics.

North American Van Lines identifies several critical red flags that signal a potential scam. These include demands for large upfront deposits, a refusal to provide written estimates, and the absence of a verifiable physical business address. Industry experts emphasize that awareness is insufficient without proactive vetting. To mitigate risk, consumers must cross-reference potential providers against official regulatory databases rather than relying solely on online recommendations, as transparent, written agreements remain the only reliable defense against sudden price hikes and service failures.
