Black August Commemoration Fuses Prison Legacy with Modern Labor Rights

Hosted by producer and organizer Richie Reseda, the event drew labor leaders, artists, and community members to reflect on the ongoing fight against systemic oppression in housing, education, and the workplace. The evening highlighted that the struggle for worker rights remains inextricably linked to broader community liberation and the protection of political prisoners.

Central to the movement is the Southern California Black Worker Hub’s #EchoBlackVoices initiative. This project focuses on expanding career pathways and workplace protections through collective organizing and political advocacy. Dawn Modkins, director of the Hub, emphasized that building trust and cross-community collaboration are essential components of their strategy. By connecting Black workers to resources and leadership development, the organization aims to solidify a regional network capable of securing greater economic stability. The event served as both a tribute to past freedom fighters and a practical demonstration of how contemporary labor movements are evolving to meet modern challenges.
