Ashish Gandham’s Blueprint for Suntory’s Oceania Expansion

As Managing Director of Suntory Global Spirits Oceania, Ashish Gandham is orchestrating a massive, US$2.1 billion multi-beverage strategy. By fusing premium spirits with non-alcoholic portfolios and prioritizing sustainable manufacturing in Queensland, he aims to cement the Japanese giant’s footprint while navigating the unique resilience of the Australian consumer market.

Ashish Gandham’s Blueprint for Suntory’s Oceania Expansion

Since its launch in July 2025, Suntory Oceania has become a testing ground for a fully integrated business model. The company has already launched 21 new products and captured significant market share, establishing itself as the second-largest ready-to-drink supplier in Australia. This growth is anchored by a US$282 million carbon-neutral manufacturing facility in Queensland, which has already achieved 2030 emission reduction targets five years ahead of schedule.

Gandham attributes this momentum to the Japanese concept of Yatte Minahare, or the freedom to fail, which encourages bold experimentation. He emphasizes that local leadership requires curiosity over certainty, a philosophy he refined across two decades in India, Singapore, and London. By shifting focus from mere data points to the Seikatsusha perspective—a holistic view of consumer motivations—the company seeks to connect with Australians beyond the point of sale. This commitment extends to environmental stewardship, notably through a US$700,000 research partnership with Griffith University to secure water resilience in the region.
