TIER IV Joins Open Invention Network 2.0 to Secure Autonomous Driving

Tokyo-based TIER IV is shifting its patent strategy by joining the Open Invention Network 2.0. The developer of the Autoware autonomous driving platform aims to mitigate legal risks for automakers and suppliers, fostering a more secure environment for the adoption of open-source software within the global automotive industry.

The move aligns TIER IV with a global framework designed to protect open-source software through patent non-aggression. By participating in OIN 2.0, which launched in January 2026, the company joins a network that grants royalty-free cross-licenses for patents covering the Linux System and an expanded range of related technologies. This collaborative approach is intended to provide partners with the confidence to integrate open-source solutions into complex automotive computing systems.

Since 2015, TIER IV has spearheaded the development of Autoware, a platform built on Linux and ROS that serves as a cornerstone for its autonomous driving initiatives. As the company continues to collaborate with semiconductor makers and vehicle manufacturers, the integration into OIN 2.0 marks a strategic pivot toward balancing intellectual property protection with the necessity of an open ecosystem. By reducing patent-related friction, TIER IV seeks to accelerate the deployment of autonomous driving technologies while maintaining a sustainable model for its global partners.
