While radiotherapy is a cornerstone of modern cancer treatment, its side effects—specifically oral mucositis—remain a major clinical burden. Current management protocols largely rely on basic symptom relief, such as saline rinses and pain medication, leaving a significant gap in targeted, disease-specific therapies. This clinical void is now becoming a focal point for pharmaceutical development, with the United States currently representing the largest market share among the seven major markets tracked, which include the EU4, the UK, and Japan.
Emerging candidates like Soligenix’s Dusquetide, EpicentRx’s RRx-001, and MitoImmune Therapeutics’ MIT-001 are currently under investigation to address the underlying biological mechanisms of tissue damage. According to Sharad Chandra Vinayak of DelveInsight, these immunomodulatory and regenerative approaches aim to move beyond supportive care by actively promoting mucosal healing without interfering with anticancer efficacy. As these therapies progress through clinical trials, they are expected to shift the landscape from reactive symptom management to active, mechanism-based intervention, offering a critical upgrade to current oncology standards.
