Indian Steelmakers Face Margin Squeeze as Coking Coal Prices Climb

A 25% surge in Australian coking coal prices over the first seven months of the year is rattling India’s steel industry. With the nation dependent on imports for 95% of its metallurgical coal needs, the rapid cost escalation is now stalling capacity expansion projects and thinning profit margins for domestic producers.

Indian Steelmakers Face Margin Squeeze as Coking Coal Prices Climb

The price rally stems from a series of global supply shocks, including delayed production at new mine sites and the fatal explosion in China’s Shanxi province. According to Banmeet Khurmi of the consultancy CRU, these disruptions have tightened a market that was previously balanced. Mining giant BHP noted that robust import demand from India has further exacerbated the upward pressure on global seaborne prices.

Despite India’s ambitious goal to reach 500 million tonnes per annum of steel capacity by 2047, current realities remain stark. Industry executives report that local steelmakers are trapped between soaring raw material costs and an inability to pass those expenses to consumers due to aggressive competition from Chinese imports. Analysts expect these elevated costs to persist through the second half of the year, forcing companies to reconsider their immediate growth timelines.
