According to Banmeet Khurmi of the consultancy CRU, these disruptions have tightened a market that was previously balanced. Mining giant BHP noted that robust import demand from India has further exacerbated the upward pressure on global seaborne prices.
Despite India’s ambitious goal to reach 500 million tonnes per annum of steel capacity by 2047, current realities remain stark. Industry executives report that local steelmakers are trapped between soaring raw material costs and an inability to pass those expenses to consumers due to aggressive competition from Chinese imports. Analysts expect these elevated costs to persist through the second half of the year, forcing companies to reconsider their immediate growth timelines.
