FibroBiologics Gains Australian Patent for Cannabidiol Disc Therapy

Degenerative disc disease remains a widespread condition, often leaving patients with few options beyond invasive surgery or palliative pain management. Current standard treatments typically focus on symptom relief rather than restoring the structural health of the spine. FibroBiologics aims to shift this dynamic by using fibroblasts—cells naturally abundant in connective tissue—to regenerate the nucleus pulposus, the gel-like core of the spinal disc.

The newly accepted Australian Patent Application No. 2020368344 covers a dual-action strategy. While the fibroblast cells work to replenish and support the disc, the addition of cannabidiol is intended to reduce cell death and heighten the regenerative activity of the fibroblasts themselves, including the increased production of growth factors like IGF-1 and EGF-1. Founder and CEO Pete O'Heeron stated that this pairing is designed to protect disc cells while actively promoting biological repair, marking a significant step in the company’s broader clinical strategy for orthopedic regeneration.
