Crowley Launches Weekly Gulf-Central America Express Shipping Route

A 15.7% surge in Central American exports to the United States has prompted a new logistics corridor. Starting September 10, Crowley will operate a weekly container service linking Port Houston directly to Santo Tomás de Castilla, Guatemala, and Puerto Cortés, Honduras, to streamline the flow of produce and consumer goods.

Crowley Launches Weekly Gulf-Central America Express Shipping Route

The new Gulf-Central America Express Service is designed to bypass traditional transshipment bottlenecks by offering a dedicated maritime link between the U.S. Gulf and major Central American trade hubs. By integrating ocean transport with warehousing and inland logistics, the company aims to reduce supply chain handoffs and provide shippers with improved visibility for both refrigerated and dry cargo. The vessels will accommodate a variety of container sizes, including 53-foot units intended to maximize intermodal efficiency for regional retailers.

Port Houston, which currently handles roughly 75% of U.S. Gulf container volume, serves as the anchor for this expansion. According to Claudia Kattan, Crowley’s vice president for Central America, Mexico and Panama, the direct route provides the reliability necessary for time-sensitive goods like fresh produce. For Port Houston leadership, the service represents a strategic opportunity to strengthen ties between Texas businesses and Central American markets, effectively shortening the path from regional docks to store shelves.
