Universal Music Group Partners with Hook to Monetize Fan Creativity

Universal Music Group and music platform Hook have finalized a licensing agreement designed to transform how fans interact with official recordings on social media. The deal shifts user-generated content from a legal gray area into a structured ecosystem where artists retain granular control over their tracks while capturing new revenue.

Unlike generative AI tools that synthesize new music, Hook’s technology focuses on letting users personalize existing tracks through remixes, video clipping, and sound effects. The collaboration follows a two-year pilot phase involving over 30 campaigns across UMG-affiliated labels, including Capitol Records and Republic Records. By integrating a rights-tracking infrastructure, the platform ensures that every piece of fan-created content is licensed and attributed to the original rightsholders.

Artists maintain the final say over how their catalog is utilized. Through the platform’s dashboard, musicians can toggle specific creative features on or off, dictating which songs are eligible for community tools and where the resulting content can be distributed. This approach seeks to replace the industry’s reactive stance toward social media trends with a proactive model, ensuring that fan engagement directly converts into compensation for creators rather than copyright infringement disputes.
