Galmed Reports Aramchol Synergy with Xtandi in Prostate Cancer Models

A preclinical study from Galmed Pharmaceuticals shows that combining the SCD1 inhibitor Aramchol with the androgen receptor blocker enzalutamide triggers a 3-to-4-fold increase in prostate cancer cell death compared to using enzalutamide alone, offering a potential new strategy to combat drug resistance in patients.

The research, conducted on VCaP cell lines, highlights the tumor's ability to adapt to standard-of-care treatments like Xtandi by shifting its lipid metabolism. By targeting the lipid desaturation pathway with Aramchol, researchers observed a significant reduction in cell viability. These findings suggest that the combination could extend the efficacy of existing therapies as tumors evolve to resist conventional androgen axis-targeting drugs.

Galmed CEO Allen Baharaff frames these results as a lifecycle management opportunity for the blockbuster drug Xtandi. With key composition of matter patents expiring in Europe in 2026 and the United States in 2027, the company is positioning the combination therapy as a potential differentiator against upcoming generic competition. Galmed has submitted a patent application for this specific drug combination and intends to begin discussions with potential pharmaceutical partners to explore its clinical path forward.
