The Energy Information Administration forecasts consumption to reach 4,268 billion kWh this year, climbing to 4,391 billion kWh by 2027. This acceleration is largely fueled by the artificial intelligence race, with Goldman Sachs projecting that data center electricity demand will skyrocket 165% by 2030. A single query on platforms like ChatGPT consumes ten times the energy of a traditional Google search, placing a gargantuan load on the existing network.

Historically, the U.S. grid was designed for localized distribution from centralized coal and gas plants. Modern renewable energy installations, however, are often situated far from demand hubs, forcing power through transmission lines never intended for such distances. This geographic mismatch, compounded by a critical shortage of transformers, has created a systemic bottleneck. Because upgrading such a complex infrastructure takes years, some regional authorities are now forcing tech giants to secure their own independent power sources, marking a shift toward decentralized energy generation to avoid widespread instability.
