Trump Administration Opens 81 Million Gulf Acres to Oil Bidding

With Brent crude prices climbing above $89 per barrel following Middle East supply disruptions, the Trump administration is auctioning 81 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico. The sale marks the third of 30 mandated auctions, though industry appetite for these offshore blocks remains notably tepid compared to the massive territory available.

Twelve companies submitted just 69 bids for the Wednesday auction, covering roughly 330,000 acres. This represents a mere 0.4% of the 15,100 unleased blocks offered across the Outer Continental Shelf. The Interior Department is placing tracts on the block ranging from nine to 11,100 feet deep, yet the high capital requirements of offshore projects continue to push producers toward faster-yielding shale investments.

Previous sales underscore a cooling interest in these federal leases. While the inaugural auction mandated by the 2025 law pulled in $300.4 million, the subsequent March sale dropped to $46.98 million. Because these offshore projects take years to reach production, Wednesday’s auction offers no immediate relief for the current supply crisis triggered by the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. The program is set to continue through 2039, providing a long-term, if currently underutilized, roadmap for federal offshore development.
