When ventilation is unbalanced, the attic becomes a trap for hot, humid air generated by daily household activities like cooking and showering. This moisture saturation does more than just compromise insulation; it accelerates the deterioration of roof sheathing and weakens shingles from the inside out. According to Gonzales, adding more vents is not a universal fix. Effective airflow requires a precise ratio where cool air enters through lower intake vents and warm, moist air exits near the peak. Without this equilibrium, pockets of stagnant air remain, fostering mold and wood rot even in homes with multiple vent installations.

Beyond structural integrity, proper ventilation directly influences energy efficiency. Insulation loses its thermal effectiveness when damp, forcing heating and cooling systems to work harder to maintain interior temperatures.
