Data Center Surplus Heat to Power Danish Greenhouse Project

The project, scheduled for completion in Q3 2028, addresses a significant vulnerability in the Danish food supply: a heavy reliance on imported fruit and vegetables during winter months. By repurposing thermal energy that would otherwise dissipate, the facility will bypass the need for traditional fossil-fuel heating, effectively turning a common data center byproduct into a resource for national food security.

Beyond the environmental gains, the development promises a tangible economic boost for the Ølgod region through job creation and infrastructure investment. Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, described the initiative as a template for responsible digital growth, while Selected Group CEO Peter Nielsen emphasized that the model is designed to be scalable and replicable at other industrial sites. The venture builds on atNorth’s existing energy-sharing efforts, including similar projects already underway in Finland and Sweden.
