Athens Opens Massive Sports Park as Ellinikon Project Scales Up

The former site of Athens International Airport has entered a new phase of urban transformation with the opening of The Ellinikon Sports Park. Spanning 287,000 square meters, the facility serves as the first major public amenity in a massive coastal redevelopment project designed to reshape the capital’s recreational landscape.

The park provides a mix of high-performance and community infrastructure, including a track and field complex, football pitches, and tennis and basketball courts. Beyond its athletic facilities, the site features 115,000 square meters of landscaped green space intended to anchor the project’s vision of a walkable, 15-minute city. The venue has already proven its utility, having hosted the EKO Super Special Stage of the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship earlier this year.

Odisseas Athanasiou, CEO of LAMDA Development, described the opening as the project’s first tangible milestone for the public. As the park welcomes residents, construction is intensifying across the site. The Little Athens neighborhood is expanding with the launch of The Courtyards, a 324-residence development slated for delivery in 2027. Commercial progress is equally rapid: the Kengo Kuma-designed Riviera Galleria has already secured tenants for 76 percent of its leasable space, while the 100,000-square-meter Ellinikon Mall has begun construction with a 2029 completion target.
