Alex Lucio Adapts Grief-Stricken Sci-Fi Novel Into Cinematic Audio Drama

In a summer defined by bombastic blockbusters, novelist Alex Lucio is taking a quieter approach to science fiction. His latest work, The Weight of a Dog, launches today as a full-cast audio drama, anchoring a sweeping multi-generational narrative on the unlikely presence of a sixty-pound English bulldog named Baloo.

Alex Lucio Adapts Grief-Stricken Sci-Fi Novel Into Cinematic Audio Drama

The story follows two families across three generations, untangling deep-seated legacies of grief and guilt. Lucio, who holds over 20 patents as a medical device inventor, grounds the narrative in actual science, utilizing concepts like 19 Hz infrasound, Penrose-Hameroff quantum consciousness, and the acoustic properties of the Great Pyramid to drive the plot. Rather than leaning into extraterrestrial tropes, the novel explores the idea that non-human intelligence has been whispering to humanity for centuries.

Aloud by AdyCo produced the audio version as a cinematic proof-of-concept, with sound design by Panos Koutselinis. The production utilizes ElevenLabs AI for voice casting under Lucio’s strict supervision, a process the creators are disclosing transparently to listeners. With the audio drama now live on platforms including Spotify, a prestige-series adaptation is already in active development, with a pilot script completed and casting underway. An illustrated print edition of the novel follows on August 16, 2026, via Palmetto Publishing.
