University of Utah and Army Reserve Finalize Landmark Land Transfer

The relocation, completed on June 19, marks the end of a unique historical chapter that began in 1862. Originally established to monitor pioneer settlers, Fort Douglas evolved into a cornerstone of the region’s development. The final transfer of the remaining 50-acre Stephen A. Douglas Army Reserve Center allows the university to integrate the site into its campus, with plans to repurpose the historic area for education, health care, and research.

Funding for the transition was a collaborative effort involving the Utah State Legislature, the Governor’s Office, and Congress. By financing the new 227,000-square-foot headquarters at Camp Williams, the state enabled the military to vacate aging, century-old infrastructure in Salt Lake City. While the Army Reserve will retain management of the fort's military cemetery and museum, the university assumes stewardship of the grounds under federal and state historic preservation guidelines. University President Taylor Randall emphasized that the university intends to honor the site's legacy while expanding its capacity for innovation.
