The state’s digital footprint has expanded significantly since the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion launched in 2022, rising from 72% coverage to 90% in just four years. This connectivity surge has directly impacted local property markets, adding $77 million in aggregate value to single-family homes across Albuquerque and Santa Fe between 2020 and 2025. Projections suggest that reaching full 90% deployment by 2029 could unlock an additional $348 million in real estate value across those two cities alone.
Beyond real estate, the fiber rollout acts as a primary utility for New Mexico’s industrial base, supporting major installations including Intel’s $17 billion semiconductor facility and Meta’s $3.3 billion data center in Los Lunas. The infrastructure has also enabled the launch of ABQ-Net, the nation’s first open-access, entanglement-based quantum network. This facility serves as a testing ground for researchers developing next-generation cybersecurity and defense applications.
Local officials highlight that the impact extends to municipal operations, where fiber-connected thermal sensors have already identified active outdoor fires along the Paseo del Bosque trail. Carlos Rosas, senior vice president at Ezee Fiber, stated that the multi-million-dollar investment focuses on building foundational technology to foster local tech innovation. With median download speeds in Albuquerque doubling to over 285 Mbps in recent years, the state is positioning its digital infrastructure to support both small-scale microbusinesses and large-scale federal and private industry projects.
