The merger, if approved by members, would create a financial powerhouse with 1.8 million members and over $34 billion in assets, positioning the combined entity as the fourth-largest credit union in the United States. BECU President and CEO Beverly Anderson will lead the organization, while SAFE President and CEO Faye Nabhani will take on the role of market president for the Greater Sacramento region. The institutions intend to maintain independent operations until the anticipated closing date of January 1, 2027.
Beyond the administrative integration, the merger promises tangible shifts for local markets. The combined entity plans to commit $1.5 million annually to non-profits in the Sacramento area, focusing on affordable housing, workforce development, and financial literacy. SAFE members are slated to gain access to an expanded branch network and increased lending capacity, while BECU intends to leverage its existing infrastructure to bolster small business support. Robert Heidt, head of the Sacramento Metro Chamber, noted that the move represents a significant injection of capital and a strategic expansion for the regional economy.
