Researchers tracking pathology through biofluids now have a new tool for isolating circulating RNA, as New England Biolabs launches its Monarch Mag Cell-free RNA Extraction Kit. Designed to capture low-abundance transcripts from plasma, serum, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid, the kit aims to simplify high-precision liquid biopsy workflows.

The kit utilizes a phenol-free magnetic bead process that addresses two common bottlenecks in liquid biopsy: the loss of small RNA fragments and the presence of contaminating DNA. By incorporating lyophilized DNase, the system effectively clears DNA interference, allowing scientists to recover a full spectrum of circulating signals, including microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs. According to Anagha Kadam, an Applications and Product Development Scientist at the Ipswich-based firm, this capability allows researchers to determine the tissue of origin for specific signals—a layer of data that remains inaccessible when relying solely on cell-free DNA.

Beyond technical performance, the product reflects a shift toward streamlined lab logistics. By lyophilizing temperature-sensitive reagents, the company enables ambient-temperature shipping, reducing cold-chain dependence. The extraction workflow is also designed for automation and scalability, integrating directly with the company’s existing NEBNext library preparation and digital PCR solutions. James Deng, Senior Product Marketing Manager, noted that this end-to-end integration is intended to provide a cohesive support structure for labs navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of cell-free nucleic acid analysis.
