Gen Z Prioritizes Lifestyle Over Location in Homeownership Strategy

Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z homebuyers would rather relocate to a different city or state than stretch their finances to enter the housing market. A new survey from NewHomeSource reveals a generation choosing geographic mobility over the aggressive budget hikes that characterized the buying habits of previous cohorts.

Gen Z Prioritizes Lifestyle Over Location in Homeownership Strategy

While millennials often viewed early market entry as a necessity to outpace rising prices, Gen Z is adopting a more disciplined financial approach. Data shows that 63% of Gen Z respondents are open to moving to find affordability, while only 19% would consider increasing their monthly housing budget. Most are unwilling to add more than $300 to their monthly housing costs, with many capping that increase at just $150.

This shift in strategy extends to home features, where Gen Z demonstrates high standards. Rather than compromising on quality or size, buyers are prioritizing backyards, garages, and modern kitchens. Experts observe that this generation is waiting to secure a specific lifestyle before committing to a purchase, rather than buying a property first and adapting their lives to fit it. Consequently, the suburbs are seeing a resurgence in popularity, with 53% of respondents identifying them as their ideal location, provided the area offers walkable amenities.
