DFRobot Brings Open-Source AI Education to FAB26 Boston

From July 27 to 31, the 22nd Fab Lab Global Conference brought together makers and educators at MIT to examine the evolution of digital fabrication. DFRobot utilized the event to demonstrate how accessible hardware platforms are shifting AI development away from cloud dependencies toward tangible, local, and transparent systems.

During a workshop titled "10 Years of Making, 5 Years of AI," Senior Training Engineer Yang Shaodong guided participants from eight countries through the integration of the Mind+ 2.0 platform and UNIHIKER M10 hardware. By performing lunar phase recognition locally, the session proved that complex machine learning can exist outside of black-box APIs. This emphasis on local processing continued in a separate session led by Rockets Xia, where educators explored the UNIHIKER K10’s edge AI capabilities to build interactive environmental monitoring tools.

Beyond technical instruction, the conference highlighted the social impact of maker education. Rebecca Jiang of Mushroom Cloud Maker Space detailed an initiative that has reached 10,000 students across 100 rural schools in China’s Guizhou and Yunnan provinces. By providing project-based learning tools, the program seeks to bridge the technology gap in underserved regions. The exhibition floor furthered this mission, showcasing the HuskyLens 2 AI Vision Sensor and specialized natural science expansion boards, both designed to integrate AI into biology and STEM curricula for a global audience.
