Benchmark spot coal prices at the port of Qinhuangdao are trending upward, with analysts at the China Coal Transportation and Distribution Association warning that the market peak remains ahead. Senior analyst Li Xuegang noted that the full impact of El Niño has yet to materialize, suggesting that the current supply-demand imbalance will intensify as the season progresses.
Supply concerns have been compounded by administrative crackdowns in key production hubs. In Yulin, the primary mining center of Shaanxi province, four mines were recently ordered to halt operations, further tightening availability. These suspensions follow a broader trend of increased safety inspections throughout the Shanxi region, spurred by a major mining disaster in May.
These disruptions arrive at a critical juncture for the national power grid. As extreme heat limits the efficiency of hydropower and wind generation, coal remains the essential "bottom-line guarantee" for the system. While national inventories remain robust, the combination of restricted mine output and relentless power demand ensures that coal will remain the central pillar of China’s energy strategy for the foreseeable future.
