Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria is restructuring its senior leadership and streamlining internal reporting lines, a strategic pivot aimed at accelerating the bank’s digital transformation and mitigating the disruptive influence of artificial intelligence on traditional retail banking and customer service operations.

BBVA Overhauls Executive Ranks to Accelerate AI Integration

The Spanish lender confirmed the appointment of Gonzalo Rodríguez, previously the head of retail banking in Spain, as the new group chief financial officer, succeeding Luisa Gómez Bravo. Simultaneously, José Luis Elechiguerra will transition from his role as head of Global Risk Management to become the country manager for Mexico, replacing Eduardo Osuna. Osuna is slated to assume the position of chairman of the board for BBVA Mexico.

Beyond these high-level shifts, the bank is consolidating its corporate structure by integrating several functional areas and establishing a new Institutional Engagement unit. The overhaul also includes fresh leadership appointments for risk, legal, strategy, and talent management departments. These changes, which remain subject to standard regulatory procedures, are scheduled to take effect on September 1.
