Blueberry Innovation: Startups Pivot from Produce to Premium CPG

Nearly six in ten consumers want more adventurous ways to enjoy blueberries, pushing the fruit beyond the produce aisle. The U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council and VentureFuel have unveiled the 2026 Blueberry Boost Accelerator cohort, a group of startups transforming the berry into everything from protein-rich jams to premium craft spirits.

The accelerator program highlights a shift in consumer demand, where the berry’s established 'health halo' is being leveraged to improve confectionery, functional nutrition, and children's hydration. While 93% of shoppers already view blueberries as a healthy choice, industry players are now testing the limits of its versatility as a platform ingredient.

The 2026 finalists include Edina-based Jam Packd Jams, which incorporates collagen and prebiotic fiber into its spreads, and Dr. John’s Healthy Sweets from Comstock Park, which is launching a line of tooth-friendly, fruit-based snacks. New York’s Oodles of Doodles is targeting the children’s hydration market, while Hammonton-based Blue Rascal Distillery is using the fruit to anchor a line of premium brandies and liqueurs. These companies are currently working with industry experts to refine their commercialization strategies ahead of a final pitch competition at The Blueberry Convention this September.

Kevin Hamilton, vice president of global marketing at the USHBC, stated that the program aims to help consumers eat better without sacrificing convenience or flavor. By moving blueberries into high-growth categories, the council hopes to create new consumption occasions that benefit growers while meeting the modern preference for functional, clean-label products.
