Ofgem Moves to Curb Data Center Speculation on UK Power Grid

The proposed Data Centre Commitment Fee requires developers to pay between £237,500 and £712,500 per megawatt upon accepting a connection offer. This charge, representing 2.5% to 7.5% of average project costs, acts as a financial safeguard; it is refunded upon successful grid connection but forfeited if a developer abandons the project. The move follows a two-year surge in connection applications that has strained infrastructure capacity and obscured actual future energy needs.

Ofgem’s Director for Energy System Design and Development, Eleanor Warburton, emphasized that speculative applications currently block viable schemes and create unnecessary uncertainty. By enforcing this fiscal barrier, the regulator hopes to filter out non-viable projects that distort planning for the £24 billion grid expansion program approved last year. The consultation reflects a broader effort to prioritize projects that align with the UK’s energy security goals and renewable integration targets.
