The Flint Grid Project in Jersey Township marks a shift in how regional grids manage capacity. By providing over five hours of discharge duration, the facility is set to become the largest battery storage system to clear the 2027/28 PJM Residual Capacity Auction, accounting for more than half of all new battery capacity for that year. It also holds the distinction of being the first large-scale system of its type permitted by the Ohio Power Siting Board.
Eolian CEO Aaron Zubaty framed the project as a solution to grid congestion rather than a mere response to demand. The company began capital commitments years ago, anticipating that flexible, high-duration storage could unlock existing transmission capacity that currently goes to waste. The system is engineered to respond in milliseconds to stabilize the grid, acting as a bridge between current infrastructure and future supply expansion. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence before the 2027–2028 PJM capacity year begins.
