Hefei pivots from high-tech hub to national stage for Chinese opera

Since the launch of the "Hundred Operas in Anhui — Starry Hefei" initiative in 2025, the city has hosted 36 distinct opera genres and 150 local troupes. These performances have drawn 400 celebrated actors, including 53 winners of the Plum Blossom Prize, China's most prestigious theatrical award. With ticket prices starting at just 10 yuan, the city has maintained an 86% occupancy rate, turning high-tech industrial efficiency toward the preservation of heritage.

The project links theatrical attendance to tourism, offering free access to sites like Mount Huangshan for ticket holders. This strategy has resonated specifically with Generation Z, who comprise nearly 74% of attendees. Campus outreach programs have been instrumental in this shift, allowing students like Yu Haoshen to access a national repertoire without extensive travel. As the city prepares to break ground on the China Opera Museum, it continues to integrate its existing technological infrastructure with a new digital ecosystem designed to sustain traditional arts for future generations.
