McDermott and ULC-Energy Partner on Dutch Nuclear Projects

McDermott has signed a cooperation agreement with ULC-Energy to advance the deployment of Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactor (SMR) projects in the Netherlands. The partnership focuses on integrating these nuclear power solutions into energy-intensive industrial processes, including hydrogen production and carbon capture initiatives.

McDermott and ULC-Energy Partner on Dutch Nuclear Projects

The collaboration leverages McDermott's engineering experience in industrial decarbonization alongside ULC-Energy’s nuclear development capabilities. By joining a strategic network that includes partners such as Siemens Energy, BAM, and Mammoet, McDermott aims to utilize its long-standing presence in the Netherlands and its hub in The Hague to accelerate the delivery of SMR-powered energy systems.

This agreement deepens a professional relationship established in 2023, when the firms conducted a study on industrial-scale hydrogen production using Rolls-Royce SMR technology coupled with Solid Oxide Electrolyzers. Rob Shaul, McDermott’s Senior Vice President of Low Carbon Solutions, stated that the firm will provide the engineering and execution expertise necessary to integrate nuclear reactors into broader industrial energy systems. ULC-Energy CEO Dirk Rabelink noted that the flexibility of SMRs to supply electricity, heat, or hydrogen remains central to their strategy for decarbonizing the Dutch energy landscape.
