The Strategic Petroleum Reserve now holds 307.7 million barrels, a figure that nears the accepted operational minimum of 250 to 300 million barrels. At this threshold, the reserve faces potential mechanical difficulties in efficiently pumping and processing its remaining crude. The current volume remains 424 million barrels below maximum capacity, underscoring the scale of drawdowns initiated during the Biden administration.
While commercial stockpiles expanded, market prices reacted sharply to broader economic signals. Brent crude slipped to $83.95 per barrel, marking a weekly decline of more than $7, while WTI fell to $79.10. Domestic production also saw a minor contraction, dipping to 13.798 million barrels per day from the previous week's 13.861 million. Meanwhile, secondary storage hubs tell a different story: inventories at Cushing, the delivery point for WTI futures, dropped by 273,000 barrels, continuing a downward trend from the previous reporting period.
