National Press Club demands end to legal threats against Gustavo Gorriti

National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. issued a stern warning that the incoming administration must choose between upholding the constitutional rule of law or perpetuating the corporate cronyism that Gorriti’s work brought to light. The recommended charges target not only the journalist but also the government attorneys who utilized his findings to pursue corrupt officials.

The organization is now calling on the U.S. delegation, headed by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, to press the new Peruvian government to honor its 1978 commitments under the American Convention on Human Rights. By protecting journalists, the administration would signal a departure from the intimidation tactics currently threatening press freedom in the region.
