Jin Hennig, Managing Director and Global Head of Metals at CME Group, noted that the launch underscores a readiness among retail traders for accessible, always-on instruments. The one-ounce contract, introduced in January 2025, was engineered specifically to bridge the gap for smaller market participants. This weekend activity arrives alongside a broader surge in interest for gold derivatives, as global geopolitical instability continues to drive volume.
The exchange reported record-breaking performance for the first half of 2026, with an average daily notional value of $125 billion across its gold futures suite. Total daily volume for the metals business reached 1.3 million contracts, a 55% increase compared to the previous year. This consistent growth reflects a sustained institutional and retail pivot toward hedging strategies in a volatile economic environment.
