Current diagnostic standards rely heavily on sputum analysis, a method that often fails to capture early-stage infections or patients with low bacterial loads. Dr. Sheng-Wei Pan of Taipei Veterans General Hospital led a study evaluating 217 patients, demonstrating that a new biosensor can quantify circulating levels of the ESAT-6 protein with high precision. Unlike tests measuring immune responses, this approach detects the bacteria directly, allowing for a clear differentiation between latent infections, active disease, and other pulmonary conditions.
The research revealed a distinct stepwise concentration of ESAT-6 in the bloodstream that correlates with the severity of the infection. This performance remained consistent regardless of patient age, sex, or comorbid conditions like diabetes. While sputum cultures remain the gold standard for verifying drug resistance, this blood-based marker offers a promising pathway for rapid clinical triage. Dr. Pan’s team is now preparing a prospective study to validate the sensor’s efficacy in real-world environments, aiming to curtail transmission rates by enabling earlier medical intervention.
