The Nationwide Retirement Institute study highlights a departure from the caution that defined 2024. One in three non-retired investors now plans to adjust their savings approach to capture new opportunities, a significant jump from 21% two years ago. Concurrently, the proportion of investors intending to manage portfolios more aggressively has climbed to 22%. This behavioral shift extends to retirement timelines, with fewer people projecting delayed exits from the workforce compared to the peak concerns recorded in 2024.
Mark Hackett, chief market strategist at Nationwide, notes that investors are reinterpreting uncertainty. Instead of retreating, many are actively rebalancing and diversifying, operating under the principle that market participation—rather than timing—remains the primary driver of long-term success. Despite this renewed confidence, a vulnerability persists: 29% of non-retired investors operate without a formal strategy to mitigate market risk. Financial advisors are bridging this gap by leaning into guaranteed income solutions, such as registered index-linked annuities, which have seen usage rise to 52% among those prioritizing risk management. As advisors grapple with client concerns over healthcare costs, tax burdens, and the solvency of Social Security, the focus has shifted toward building portfolios that balance growth with downside protection.
