A Sweet Tribute: Sara Lee Celebrates the Woman Behind the Brand

When Sara Lee turned 85 this July, the company that bears her name faced a singular challenge: how to bake a birthday cake for the woman who inspired one of America’s most recognizable dessert brands. The answer arrived in the form of a custom creation honoring her legacy and her father’s vision.

A Sweet Tribute: Sara Lee Celebrates the Woman Behind the Brand

The development team at the Oakbrook Terrace headquarters designed a unique, layered dessert they dubbed the “Cheesecaken.” Crafted by senior food scientists David Meza and Adam Hegadorn alongside technical services manager Becky Sowa, the creation combined two of the brand’s signature staples: classic pound cake and cheesecake, accented with fresh strawberries. The cake served as a tribute to the standard of quality set by Charles Lubin, who founded the company 77 years ago with a promise that any product carrying his daughter’s name would represent the best.

This celebration marks a transition for the bakery, which is currently entering a new chapter under fresh leadership. CEO Pete Laport emphasized that the event served as a reminder of the core values guiding the company’s future. Chief Marketing Officer Johnni Rodgers noted that the project was intentional, designed to honor both the family history behind the label and the craftsmanship that continues to define their products. To ensure the entire staff could participate in the milestone, the bakery team produced a replica cake for associates at the Illinois headquarters, reinforcing a connection between the brand’s industrial scale and its founding family origins.
