American Lung Association Launches Campaign to Boost COVID-19 Treatment

With COVID-19 hospitalizations reaching 250,000 in the most recent respiratory season, the American Lung Association is launching a national education campaign. The initiative targets healthcare providers, aiming to increase the utilization of underused antiviral therapies and preventative measures for patients at high risk of severe illness.

American Lung Association Launches Campaign to Boost COVID-19 Treatment

Despite significant clinical advancements, life-saving COVID-19 treatments remain critically underutilized. Current data reveals that antiviral usage persists below 15%, and only 16% of eligible patients receive treatment within the necessary five-day window following infection. Low vaccination rates—with only 18% of adults and 9% of children receiving the 2025-26 vaccine—further complicate public health efforts to curb the virus's long-term impact. Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, emphasized that healthcare providers remain the most trusted source of patient information, making their fluency in current therapeutic options essential for improving outcomes.

The campaign, supported by Shionogi, focuses on bridging the gap between available medical resources and patient care. It provides clinicians with evidence-based guidance on prescribing oral and IV antiviral medications, as well as prophylactic options like ensitrelvir and pemivibart. By focusing on high-risk groups, including those with chronic lung diseases, diabetes, or compromised immune systems, the organization seeks to normalize discussions around preventative care and early intervention. Professionals seeking updated resources and clinical guidelines are encouraged to visit the association's dedicated portal at Lung.org/hcp-covid.
