Nucor Reports Strong Second Quarter Earnings on Record Mill Shipments

Nucor Corporation posted net earnings of $1.16 billion for the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant climb from the $743 million reported in the first quarter. This growth, fueled by higher steel mill volumes and improved pricing, allowed the company to secure two consecutive quarterly shipment records.

Nucor Reports Strong Second Quarter Earnings on Record Mill Shipments

The Charlotte-based steel giant reported net sales of $10.40 billion for the period ending July 4. CEO Leon Topalian attributed the performance to robust investment across key U.S. economic sectors and favorable federal trade policies. The steel mills segment served as the primary engine for this momentum, benefiting from both increased output and a $130 million reduction in costs tied to prior-period raw material procurement refunds. Beyond core steel production, the company realized a $61 million non-cash, pre-tax benefit stemming from its investment in fusion energy firm Helion following a successful capital financing round.

Management remains optimistic regarding the upcoming quarter, projecting higher consolidated earnings despite anticipated margin compression in the raw materials segment. The company continues to prioritize shareholder returns, repurchasing approximately 1.53 million shares during the second quarter. With $2.69 billion in cash and short-term investments on hand, Nucor maintains a stable financial foundation, supported by its A-/A-/A3 credit ratings.
