Lowe's Foundation Pushes Skilled Trades Investment Past $60 Million

With an estimated 2.1 million skilled trades jobs projected to remain unfilled by 2030, the Lowe's Foundation is scaling its intervention. The organization announced nearly $8 million in new Gable Grants for 10 community and technical colleges, pushing its total investment in workforce training beyond $60 million since 2023.

This latest infusion of capital expands the foundation's partner network to 73 organizations across 30 states. The initiative targets critical shortages in high-demand fields such as HVAC, electrical work, plumbing, and construction. By funding mobile labs, bilingual instruction, and immersive hands-on training, the foundation aims to bridge the gap between classroom education and the immediate needs of the industrial sector.

Janice Dupré, president and chair of the Lowe's Foundation, emphasized that the strategy extends beyond simple financial support. The goal is to build a national flywheel that connects educators with local industry, creating a collaborative model to accelerate talent development. This effort is a central component of the foundation's broader, $250 million commitment to train 250,000 skilled trades professionals by 2035.

The 10 grant recipients include institutions such as Chattahoochee Technical College in Georgia, Miami Dade College in Florida, and WSU Tech in Kansas. These colleges are using the funding to modernize their facilities—ranging from new electrical labs to simulated jobsite environments—to ensure students are workforce-ready upon graduation. With the Department of Education projecting potential economic losses of up to $1 trillion annually due to the labor shortage, these programs are designed to provide both the infrastructure and the career pathways necessary to revitalize the American skilled trades pipeline.
