APIGA Marks Decade of Shaping Asia Pacific Internet Governance

Since its 2016 inception, the academy has functioned as a central pipeline for policymakers, technical experts, and civil society advocates across the region. Co-hosted by ICANN and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, alongside partners like DotAsia and the Internet Society, the five-day intensive workshop provides a foundation for maintaining an accessible and stable digital infrastructure.

Sally Costerton, ICANN’s Senior Vice President for Global Stakeholder Engagement, emphasized that the program’s longevity stems from its ability to translate technical governance models into practical experience for young professionals. This focus on hands-on learning expanded in 2024 with the launch of localized versions of the academy. These smaller, community-specific programs have already spread to ten economies, allowing for instruction in local languages and a sharper focus on regional challenges. As the organization transitions into its second decade, it continues to anchor ICANN’s broader strategy of fostering youth participation through initiatives like NextGen@ICANN, ensuring the next generation remains equipped to protect an open and interoperable Internet.
