Gold Stagnates as US Economic Resilience Defies Expectations

Gold prices remain anchored above $4,000 an ounce, struggling to find upward momentum as the U.S. economy shows unexpected strength. Fresh data from S&P Global suggests a robust start to the third quarter, tempering investor appetite for the precious metal despite broader market volatility.

Gold Stagnates as US Economic Resilience Defies Expectations

The flash Composite Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) climbed to 53.6 in July, up from 51.9 in June, marking an eight-month high for the economic barometer. This surge was primarily fueled by a strong performance in the services sector, which reached 53.6, significantly outpacing economist forecasts that predicted stagnation. While the manufacturing sector saw a marginal dip to 53.8 from 53.9, business confidence regarding the year-ahead outlook hit an eight-month peak.

Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that the survey data aligns with an annualized GDP growth rate of 2.0%, a notable improvement over the 1.2% pace recorded in the second quarter. The data also highlighted a renewed interest in hiring, with employment numbers rising for the first time in three months. Despite these positive indicators, spot gold showed little reaction, trading at $4,058.10, a modest gain of 0.23% for the day.
