Home Builders Institute CEO Challenges Tech Giants Over Skilled Trade Gap

“Welcome to the Future Builders of America,” Home Builders Institute CEO Ed Brady said, responding to the formation of the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades. While acknowledging the entry of companies like Google and BlackRock into workforce training, Brady warned that solving a $10.8 billion labor crisis requires more than short-term initiatives.

Since 1967, HBI has operated as a nonprofit training provider, focusing on populations ranging from veterans to justice-involved individuals. Brady emphasized that the current skilled labor shortage is not merely an inconvenience, as it prevents the construction of 19,000 homes annually and delays projects by nearly two months. HBI graduates currently enter the workforce with an average starting wage exceeding $23 per hour, a benchmark Brady hopes new corporate entrants will match through long-term investment.

The HBI chief raised pointed questions regarding the structure and implementation strategy of the new corporate coalition. He signaled that success hinges on proven pre-apprenticeship pathways and wraparound support services, rather than temporary programs. With HBI already operating over 600 training locations and having introduced 80,000 students to the trades in the last five years, Brady noted that the organization is prepared to partner with the new alliance to scale existing, effective models. He maintained that trade jobs remain uniquely resistant to AI displacement, making them a critical pillar for future economic stability.
