The European Central Bank’s latest quarterly survey of 76 non-financial firms reveals a disconnect between rising input costs and final consumer prices. While petrochemicals and transport costs jumped by 20-30%, businesses closer to the retail level report minimal room for adjustment. Food retailers noted that elevated fuel bills are forcing shoppers to abandon branded goods in favor of cheaper private labels, effectively capping the industry's ability to raise prices.
Fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers, who are increasingly capturing market share with innovative, low-cost electronics, further complicates the landscape. This pressure has forced a shift in corporate strategy: rather than reinvesting within the euro area, many European manufacturers are directing capital toward Asia or Eastern Europe to maintain competitiveness. While the boom in artificial intelligence continues to drive some business investment, it remains insufficient to offset the broader erosion of margins caused by the current economic climate.
