The partnership, formalized during the opening of the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Center, focuses on creating a Virtual Shipyard that mirrors physical operations. By integrating digital twin technology, the companies intend to simulate production processes and equipment performance to preemptively identify quality issues and schedule bottlenecks. This shift allows for the seamless transmission of design modifications directly to the production floor in real time.
Beyond basic integration, the project serves as a foundation for autonomous manufacturing. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering plans to leverage these analytical capabilities to deploy robots and autonomous systems capable of executing complex tasks without manual intervention. Tony Hemmelgarn, CEO of Siemens Digital Industries Software, described the initiative as a blueprint for modern shipbuilding, designed to enhance global competitiveness and workforce productivity. H.K. Kim, President & CEO of the South Korean shipbuilder, noted that the integration of AI and automation is set to redefine how vessels are designed and sustained throughout their operational lifecycles.
