The proposed legislation arrives as a direct counter to federal restrictions that could cripple a $28.4 billion sector and jeopardize over 328,000 jobs nationwide. Chad Paydo, co-CEO of Sunmed, argues that the current trajectory punishes compliant small businesses and farmers rather than fostering a safe, regulated environment. He maintains that the industry requires clear, standardized oversight rather than the blanket bans currently on the table.

If enacted, the Lawful Hemp Protection Act would overturn the restrictive 0.4 mg THC limit per container scheduled for implementation this November. Instead, it directs the FDA to establish serving limits through rigorous scientific review. The bill also codifies requirements for child-resistant packaging, age verification, and precise product labeling—protocols Sunmed already maintains voluntarily. Beyond safety, the legislation aims to preserve interstate commerce for hemp-derived products, allowing states to maintain their own standards while providing a stable, common-sense framework for domestic growers and retailers.
