The drug targets the orexin 2 receptor, a critical component in the neurological pathway that regulates human wakefulness. By activating this receptor, the compound seeks to restore normal sleep-wake stability, addressing a core biological deficit in patients with narcolepsy—a chronic disorder that can cause sudden sleep attacks, muscle tone loss known as cataplexy, and fragmented nighttime rest.

Johan Luthman, Lundbeck’s Executive Vice President of R&D, noted that the designation highlights the urgent need for innovative treatments beyond current symptom management options. The company is now positioned to work more closely with regulators to advance the drug's safety and efficacy profile. While Lu AH69593 remains in early-stage development and is not yet approved for clinical use, the Fast Track status provides a streamlined framework for the drug’s potential path to market.
