A Marathon Tribute to Kidney Disease Awareness

When Dwaine “DJ” Haskins Jr. lined up for the 2025 New York City Marathon, his focus shifted from personal endurance to a deeper tribute. His journey, captured in the new short film Run, DJ, Run, serves as a testament to the resilience of those navigating kidney disease alongside their caregivers.

A Marathon Tribute to Kidney Disease Awareness

The film documents Haskins’ preparation for the 26.2-mile race, a commitment inspired by his uncle, David Rush, who has relied on dialysis since 2007. Rush, a Kidney Care Options Educator at U.S. Renal Care, provides a personal perspective on the chronic condition that affects millions of Americans. For Haskins, running transformed from a solitary exercise into a platform for the National Kidney Foundation, emphasizing the vital role of advocacy in a community often defined by rigid medical schedules.

Beyond the race, the project highlights the broader ecosystem of support required for those living with renal failure. U.S. Renal Care, which provides dialysis services to over 37,000 patients, backed the production to illustrate that the impact of kidney disease extends well beyond the patient. By documenting the intersection of athletic discipline and familial devotion, the film brings visibility to the daily realities of patients and the families who support them.
